    ABSTRACT:

This paper is a study of students’ academic performance in the University of Ibadan. It was discovered that certain number of students who were admitted into the University, for the attainment of a degree, were unable to meet the requirements to be able to graduate on time. A situation where some students have to study longer than the four- year term is undesirable and should be checked. It is this kind of unwanted situation that prompted this project, which seeks for the factors that may be associated with the students’ performance, and also looks into the ways and means by which the performance on. As observed from the tests carried out not all the factors have significant effects on the academic performance of the students of the University. Recommendations are therefore put forward to help enhance the academic performance of students in our higher institutions of learning.

    ABSTRACT:

One of the major challenges of globalization for a developing country is to preserve its unique culture and practices while stepping inside the global arena of inclusiveness. At Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in the Sultanate of Oman, the College of Education has been accepted as a precandidate for National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation. The faculty is facing a series of transformations as they ready for their looming site-visit in a year’s time. This project focuses on the early days of the process of adapting a U.S. assessment management system to enhance sustainable growth and development in Oman’s leading educational institution. As any process that delves deeply into the practices of an organization, the NCATE accreditation process has quickly unveiled commonly held assumptions and practices with little recognition to country, culture, or creed. NCATE, a highly respected American performance based professional accreditation body for teacher preparation is, in short, making life challenging lately at the SQU College of Education. Our project examines these challenges from three unique viewpoints within the Instructional and Learning Technologies Department in the College– an Omani faculty member, an American Head of Department (HOD) who has lived and worked in the Sultanate for four years, and an international consultant, a former dean from a medium-sized regional Kentucky university who visited SQU's College of Education this past year. Documenting the process through journals, three differing worldviews and perceptions emerge that share common concerns and distinct disquiets. Extending these insights to SQU’s larger mission, to become a “world-class university” and to “add something new to world knowledge,” carries with it important questions about what is at stake when a foreign educational institution attempts to align itself with an assessment system as foreign as the horse is to the camel. Preliminary conclusions are based on the currently collected evidence and emerging themes from the documentations.

    ABSTRACT:

We have calculated the high pressure properties, Grüneisen parameter and its volume derivatives of metals Platinum, Iron, Vanadium and Niobium using free volume theory. We have used some of the most reliable high pressure equation of state (EOS) to determine the thermo-elastic parameter and its higher order volume derivatives based on the generalized free volume theory. We have used two EOS`s (a) Stacey Reciprocal K-primed EOS, (b) Kushwah Logarithmic EOS to find the Gru ̈neisen parameter and its volume derivatives for metals at different values of compression from (1.0 to 0.5). The results for thermo-elastic parameters show systematic variations.

    ABSTRACT:

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of blood cancer which starts in the bone marrow. In AML, bone marrow cells do not mature. The immature cell are called blast cells, keep building up. This type of leukemia can spread quickly to the blood and to other parts of the body such as Lymph nodes, Liver, Spleen, Brain and spinal cord. In the present case study , a patient of age 23 years of acute leukaemia who was advised for bone marrow transplantation by allopathic hospital, came to take Ayurvedic consultation. The patient was treated with the concept of rakt dusti janya vyadhi. Because the rakt is similar with pitta so the ayurvedic formulation which works on balance the pitta will also work in making the rakt in equilibrium. Therfore assuming the cause of leukemia as pitta dusti , the total line of treatment was planned which can corrects the pitta and inturns rakt. Also some medicines which works on liver as it has important role in formation of blood cells, are also incorporated in the line of treatment. After a treatment of two months, the patient represented with drastic changes in signs and symptoms, with simultaneous improvement in his blood investigations too. The patient is also advised to follow pathya apathya as mentioned.

    ABSTRACT:

There are many diverging opinions on the issue of immigration and in 2012 one specific cultural group received large attention within national media. One movie offers a portrayal of what life would be like in California if those of Hispanic ethnicity suddenly disappeared. Director Sergio Arau’s “A Day without a Mexican” (2004) is a satirical comedy that seeks to demonstrate how important Hispanics are to California. This movie intends to be comedic while conveying a persuasive message about the important role of Hispanics in America. Although race in the media has been traditionally focused on escalating negative portrayals of various ethnic groups, there is an apparent trend in employing humor in media to combat stereotypes and as a form of protest. This paper explores the types of rhetorical devices and strategies the film “A Day without a Mexican” (2004) uses to combat race issues, confront stereotypes, and then outlines the four main strategies discovered within the film.

    ABSTRACT:

Polyurethane is widely used in many products, such as the manufacture of plastic foams, sponges, paints, coatings and fibers. Conventional polyurethane is mostly produced from polyols and diisocyanate. The ecological problems related to the environmental pollution by synthetic polymers like polyurethane are one of the major concerns of the present days, especially because they are difficult to degrade easily and the entire process is time consuming. Currently research is being undertaken on different aspects of polyurethane biodegradation, such as polyurethane degrading microorganisms, the mechanisms of degradation and on isolation and investigation of polyurethane degrading enzymes. This study focuses on the biodegradation of polyurethane by microorganisms isolated from cedar wood. Microbial degradation of polyurethane is thought to be mainly due to the hydrolysis of carbonyl bonds. Analyses were carried out by Infrared spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy.

    ABSTRACT:

This study aims to compare high-school students in Turkey and the U.S., in terms of career-decision making difficulties. The research group consists of a total of 576 students, including 296 high-school students in the U.S, and 280 high-school students in Turkey. The data of the research were collected by the “Career Decision-Making Difficulties Questionnaire” (CDDQ). The career decision-making difficulties are composed of three sub-scales, including lack of readiness, lack of information and inconsistent information. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to evaluate whether the sub-scale scores for career decision-making difficulties experienced by high-school students in the U.S. and Turkey differ depending on an individual’s gender and class. It was found that there are significant differences in gender and class variables in the career decision-making difficulties experienced by high-school students in Turkey and the U.S. The findings of the research were compared using the data collected.

    ABSTRACT:

Background: It has been suggested that restoration of altered neurodynamics can lead to reduction in pain and improvement in physical function. Therefore a relationship should exist between neurodynamics and physical activity (PA). So the aim of present study was to find out the prevalence and magnitude of relationship of neurodynamics with physical activity in young and healthy individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 50 young healthy subjects (age of 20.62±2.13yrs) with normal neurological status. Inclinometric measurements were taken and compared at first onset of symptoms (P1) and at maximally tolerated symptoms (P2) during straight-leg raise (SLR) tests with ankle in plantar grade. Total PA score (TPAS) was calculated by using International Physical Activity Questionnaire of last ‘7days’. The level of significance was set at p≤0.05. Results: Males (Mn) were more physically active than females (t=1.62). In whole sample (Nn) fair positive correlation was there between left P2 and TPAS (r=0.38). In females (Fn) there was a fair positive correlation of TPAS to P2 of right leg (r=0.41). P2 was significantly higher than P1 in both right (t=18.76) and left (t=19.75) lower extremities in in Nn , Fn and Mn. Extremely significant positive correlation was there between all P1 and P2 in Nn , Fn and Mn. Conclusion: Neurodynamics has also a fair positive correlation to PA in general population to non-dominant leg while in females to dominant leg. Increase in PA can increase the neural mobility of lower limb in young and healthy adults.
