    ABSTRACT:

Introduction: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a promising therapy for sickle cell anemia, offering a potential cure. However, its access is limited by economic obstacles, such as high costs, shortage of compatible donors, and specialized infrastructure. The lack of financial resources in developing countries and the scarcity of public policies aggravate the situation. Objective: To investigate the therapeutic potential of stem cells in the treatment of patients with sickle cell anemia, evaluating their efficacy, safety, and impact on patients' quality of life. Methodology: an integrative review of articles published between 2013 and 2024 in the PubMed/MEDLINE and BVS databases was carried out, focusing on clinical outcomes and impact on quality of life. The analysis was divided into three axes: benefits, risks and limitations, and economic and social obstacles. Results and Discussion: HSCT has been an effective option for sickle cell anemia since the 1990s, with success rates of up to 95%. It offers cure in up to 90% of cases, but presents risks such as graft-versus-host disease and long-term complications. Alternatives, such as umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation and gene therapies, are being explored, but with lower success rates and safety and cost challenges. Conclusion: Although effective, HSCT faces economic, clinical and social barriers to its large-scale implementation. Reducing clinical risks and overcoming economic barriers, in addition to public policies to finance treatment and improve health infrastructure, are essential to make HSCT accessible, especially in low-income countries.

    ABSTRACT:

This research investigates the impact of discipline and disciplinary procedures on effective service delivery in the Nigerian public service. It examines the existing disciplinary framework, its implementation challenges, and the perceived effectiveness of disciplinary actions in improving public service performance. The study utilized the bureaucratic theory as its theoretical framework in understanding discipline and disciplinary procedures and effective service delivery in Nigeria's public service. Qualitative methods of data collection and content analysis procedures were utilised. Findings reveal significant gaps in the implementation of disciplinary measures, including weak enforcement, lack of transparency, and inadequate training for disciplinary committees. These shortcomings contribute to low morale, decreased productivity, and ultimately hinder effective service delivery. The research concludes with recommendations for improving disciplinary procedures, such as strengthening the independent oversight of disciplinary proceedings, enhancing transparency and accountability, and providing comprehensive training programs for all stakeholders involved in the disciplinary process.

    ABSTRACT:

Background: Female genital mutilation (FGM), a harmful practice prevalent in some communities in Kenya has significant psychological, physical and reproductive health consequences for survivors. Prevalence of FGM in Kenya is on a downward trend, reportedly from 21% in 2014 to 15% in 2022(1). FGM can result in complications, including sexual dysfunction, chronic pain and complications during childbirth(2). The psychological impact for survivors may manifest as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and difficulties in sexual relationships due to impaired genital function(3). One common effect of FGM is the loss of sexual sensation with the inability to achieve sexual satisfaction and orgasm, due to partial or complete removal of the clitoris. Clitoroplasty aims to restore the aesthetics and functionality of the clitoris for women who have undergone FGM(4). The procedure aims to restore nerve function and sensitivity of the clitoris, thereby improving sexual well-being of the patient. By reconstructing genital anatomy, the surgery helps to mitigate risks during childbirth, improving both reproductive health outcomes and overall quality of life for survivors.

    ABSTRACT:

The present work aims to study the general and specific combining capacity of the varieties involved in the crossing according to the complete diallel scheme. The trial undertaken in randomized block with four (4) replications, on mineral nutrition (N24 P 12K 12 low background, N48P24K24 high background) was carried out in the experimental station of the National Institute of Agronomic Research of Brazzaville (IRA) in the Republic of Congo. The following characteristics were taken into account: The mass of the main panicle, the number of spikelets completed on the main panicle, the growth rate of the embryonic stem (coleoptile), the growth rate of the embryonic root, the length of the main panicle and the mass of the main panicle. On the basis of the mass of grains per plant in all the varieties studied, the varieties Liman, VNIIR 7679 have a high general combining capacity. The specific combining capacity is maximum at this point for the following combinations: Liman/ Khazar, VNIIR 7679/ Khazar, Droujny/ Leader. The study carried out made it possible to identify varieties with a high overall combining capacity for a certain number of characteristics.

    ABSTRACT:

Being proficient in a second language can present difficulties for adult immigrants (Hu, 2016; Chand, 2021; Islam, Ahmad & Islam, 2022; Amoah & Yeboah, 2021; Steber & Rossi, 2021); oral proficiency is considered the most challenging because it demands the display of multiple abilities (complexity, accuracy, and fluency, Kuiken & Vedder, 2018) that have to be used immediately and in real time to have a successful social interaction. It has been observed that many adult Mexican immigrants in the U.S. present low levels of oral proficiency in English, regardless of their geographical proximity and the number of years living in the country. This phenomenon may be the result of multiple factors (social, emotional, or cultural ones). Our purpose was to explore the reasons for the lack of oral proficiency. We conducted a qualitative phenomenological study and, by using a semi-structured interview, collected the experiences of four adult Mexican immigrants: 3 females, one age 64 and two age 54, and one male age 57. They have lived in the U.S. for more than 15 years. Findings revealed that the need for communication as well as personal experiences during social interaction of the immigrants in an English-speaking environment may favor or not the development of the oral skill in English as a second language.

    ABSTRACT:

This study examines the impact of armed conflict on food security in Nigeria, with a particular focus on how insurgency, farmer-herder clashes, and rural banditry disrupt agricultural productivity, market access, and food distribution systems. Guided by Conflict Theory, the research explores the relationship between conflict and food insecurity, focusing on availability, accessibility, utilisation, and stability of food. The study aims to (i) examine the impact of armed conflict on food production and distribution, (ii) assess the socioeconomic consequences of food insecurity, and (iii) explore coping strategies adopted by affected communities. A review of relevant literature and empirical studies across the North-East, Middle Belt, and North-West regions highlights severe disruptions caused by conflict, including displacement, farmland inaccessibility, and weakened supply chains, all of which exacerbate hunger and malnutrition. The findings reveal that affected communities often adopt short-term coping mechanisms such as migration, food rationing, and informal community support, which offer limited resilience. In response, the study recommends that the government enhance security in agricultural zones, implement agricultural recovery and livelihood support programs, and promote community-based peace-building initiatives to strengthen long-term food system resilience. These recommendations aim to inform policy decisions that support sustainable food security and socioeconomic stability in Nigeria's conflict-affected regions.

    ABSTRACT:

Contamination in drinking water affects society and the phenomenon becomes a global problem. Some contaminants are general and some depend on the geographical location. The extent of the contamination also depends on geographical location. Fluoride is such a contaminant presence of water causes Fluorosis. The maximum permissible limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mgL-1. Endeavors are going on in chemical Laboratories stored throughout the globe for defluoridation of drinking water and several such procedures have been developed and recommended. But another side of the problem is disposal of the affluent containing fluoride which would be responsible for newer pollution. One way of getting rid of fluoride-rich sludge is to use the same in manufacturing brick. Mixing sludge with clay not only removes the hazards of further pollution but also imparts special characteristics to bricks thus manufactured.

    ABSTRACT:

The study focused on the comparative determination of the effects of the combination of leaf extracts of Carica papaya (CP) and Vernonia amygdalina (VA) and Artemether-based combination therapy (ACTs) on Plasmodium berghei infected male wistar rats. Fifty (50) male wistar rats, weighing 100 to 150g, were allotted into 5 groups (n=7). Group 2 (negative control) was infected but not treated, groups 3-5 which were infected received 250mg/kg b.w each of CP and VA in combination and 4mg/kg b.w of the two reference ACTs. Treatment was done orally once daily for 3 consecutive days, after which the animals were sacrificed and haematological analysis carried out. Afterwards, an observatory period of 7 days commenced after which another round of sacrifice was done. Before treatment, parasitemia count of animals in groups 3-5 was substantially (p<0.05) higher when juxtaposed with group 2. AST and ALT activities were significantly (p<0.05) elevated in group 3-5 when matched with group 2. Plasmodium berghei induction meaningfully (p<0.05) lowered white blood cell (WBC) at all groups. After treatment, the extracts and drug which notably (p<0.05) lowered plasmodium count, RBC, WBC, PCV, Hb and Platelet levels, did not meaningfully(p>0.05) affect the activities of ALP, AST and ALT. After 7 days of observation, the extracts and drug efficaciously (p<0.05) reduced plasmodium count, WBC and ALP activity further at all groups. These results indicate that the leaf extracts in combination are as efficacious as the ACTs.

    ABSTRACT:

The efficacy of functional foods in stages of gastrointestinal cancer is evidenced by compounds such as prebiotics, probiotics, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, and dietary fibers. Objective: To evaluate the influence of functional foods on the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. Methodology: This was a bibliographic study of an exploratory-descriptive type with a qualitative approach. The data collection began with a bibliographic survey conducted through research of scientific productions on the proposed theme, covering the period from 2014 to 2024. The literature search was carried out in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) and PubMed. It is noteworthy that the LILACS and BDENF databases were consulted through the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The searches were conducted using the Descriptors: Intestinal Neoplasms, Functional Foods, and Gastrointestinal Cancer, in Portuguese and English, with the aid of the Boolean operator "AND". Results and Discussion: Functional foods have chemopreventive properties, inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells and promoting apoptosis. They are most effective in the early stages of the disease and may include probiotics and prebiotics to maintain intestinal health and reduce the adverse effects of chemotherapy. They also modulate the microbiome, improving the efficacy of treatments and aiding in the recovery of microbial diversity during oncological treatment. Conclusion: Dietary strategies that include prebiotics, probiotics, polyphenols, and fibers can optimize therapeutic outcomes and improve the quality of life of patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

    ABSTRACT:

According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, history is the past events connected with the development of a particular place, subject, etc. Thus the nineteenth century was a period which impacted the history of African countries, between tradition and modernism. There was a mixing of African and European civilization; the latter through the colonization of Africa by Europe brought a lot of changes in African society on the political, economic and social levels. For Europeans, this colonization had positive results in that it allowed them to impose their languages, their cultures and to develop their economies (through the exploitation of human and natural resources). On the other hand, for Africans, this colonization had negative results and many denounced it, particularly writers who, through post-colonial theory, defended Africa during and after colonization. We can cite here Wole Soyinka who in his writings like Aké, the Years of Childhood decried this. In Aké: The Years of Childhood, Soyinka employs a narrative style to depict a childhood shaped by cultural and religious blending, where African and European traditions, traditional beliefs and Christianity, as well as local and colonial powers, coexist harmoniously.

    ABSTRACT:

The current rapid deterioration of air quality in most cities can be attributed mainly to ongoing urbanization. This study simulates the dispersion of atmospheric pollutants in the city of Bamako using a HYSPLIT model, taking into account a case of total suspended particulate (TSP) emission in the environment assumed to be 180μg / m3 which exceeds two times the WHO standards. Wind climatology was established using the Wind Rose Plot (WRPlot) view. The predominant wind speed on the city is 2 to 6 knots (1 to 4 m / s) and the wind direction is southwesterly with varying seasonal direction. The forward trajectory of a released pollutant in the city is generally observed to move towards the west side of the city. It is observed that the pollutant is dispersed beyond 100 km of the city, which reduces the concentration in the city. The study recommends a consultative planning process of the city that influences the characteristics of the wind on the city. Most industrial activities should be located in the extreme south of the city in order to minimize the concentration of pollutants in the city. The study further recommends that research be conducted over a longer period to determine the quality of rainwater during the rainy season. This requires accurate observation and monitoring of pollution levels in the city and other cities in the country.
